Recommendation

For more than a decade, the Learning and Development Global Sentiment Survey has asked learning professionals worldwide about workplace L&D trends and challenges. The 2024 report, which is co-sponsored by getAbstract and therefore unrated, analyzes the feedback of over 3,000 L&D professionals from 97 countries. Learning expert Donald H. Taylor’s survey reveals AI as the year’s “hottest” topic and greatest challenge. Taylor also explores pandemic-era trends that have declined in influence, the growing concern with data and skills, and the role that L&D needs to play in an AI-dominated world.

Summary

AI is the hottest L&D topic in 2024 — and presents the biggest challenge.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) — software that analyzes data and makes smart decisions — took the top spot in the 2024 Global Sentiment Survey. Out of 3,270 respondents, 21.5% of Learning and Development (L&D) professionals said AI was “hot” in 2024, setting a record high for the survey’s 11-year history. This interest spans the L&D spectrum, including those who identify as in-house L&D professionals, vendors, educators, and freelancers. Respondents also view AI as one of their biggest challenges. Despite its rapid development — even AI-specializing academics have trouble keeping up — actual implementation of AI tools has been slow. In 2023, only 45% of L&D employers had begun to explore AI tools. In 2024, most L&D practitioners will begin using AI tools in their workflows with greater frequency.
